Anton dreams of armchairs

By

Anton has had a good month. His energy consumption is down and his reputation capital has doubled after volunteering at the Sunnyside Nursing Home. Content, he relaxes into his fabricated Eichholtz Goldoni armchair, swipes off his retina display and shuts his eyes. It’s very comfortable, the armchair. His Drexler did a good job of fabricating it, of manipulating the molecules to the exact specifications. But Anton can only imagine the luxury of reclining in the genuine article, where the stitching isn’t perfect and there isn’t the permanent still-new smell. One more good month and he’ll have enough social capital to own the real thing. ‘Is that what makes me human now?’ he thinks as he sinks closer to sleep. The quest for authenticity. He thinks of his Grandad, telling him of the once endless chase for money, of entire lives spent, ruined even, pursuing ‘the dollar’ so that people could fill their houses with things they eventually just threw away. It sounded like madness, and yet, so visceral. People dying over money. He briefly finds himself pining for such folly, until his firing synapses alert his retina display, which over-rides its shutdown and projects a Fijian beach for him to fall into blissful slumber, whereupon he dreams of antique furniture.

I recently read in the New Scientist about Eric Drexler, who in 1977 imagined a nano-fabrication device capable of manipulating individual molecules to produce anything you wanted. I think there’s a whole world to create here, with all the implications that would ensue from such technology, where the question becomes one of access rather than ownership (like Spotify for example).

    1. Thank you! It feels like, if I allowed it to, this could open up a novel-shaped hole in my life. But it can’t, not yet 🙂

      1. I can see a novel seed in this too. Maybe you’ll come back to it when you’re done with your current project(s) ☺

“One more good month and he’ll have enough social capital to own the real thing.” This line reminds me of the ‘Black Mirror’ episode ‘Nosedive’ where people use, in essence, facebook likes in order to get things that they want.

I really like your vision of the future, I can see that happening today even. It isn’t ‘stuff’ any more that people pine over,(some still do, unfortunately) but experiences. The thought of buying music, or a house even seems archaic, we endlessly rent and stream everything we need. ‘Property’ isn’t that sought after anymore. Since our lives are so subject to change with an ever fluctuating market and lack of job security, that we relish the moment instead of the future. Your future seems very plausible and I would love to read more. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much. Yeah, the idea of ownership is slipping, but we are human and I think people will still be desperate for ‘authenticity’. That conflict will hopefully make for some good stories anyway!

Well, we are desiring ‘authentic’ food when we shop organic, which a hundred years ago no one even thought twice about if their food was ‘real’ or not. Lol

I liked your word choice to open up this piece, like energy consumption and reputation reminding me of a video game. In this future that you imagined, it seems humans are as disconnected with reality and what it means to be human as robots with artificial intelligence.

    1. Heh, yeah, reputation and ‘social responsibility’ is the new currency. No one works for money now

  9. You make character development seem so easy because you do so much in a small space. I know that is far from easy, especially to be done so clearly and concisely. This is working. Well done.

    1. Thank you so much Kathy! I often just think you can tell more about a character by one tiny detail – how they react to something or what they think about something – than by pages of exterior description. Also, in truth, I find exposition pretty boring to read and really boring to write so I’m just doing all I can to avoid it!

  10. Ben , I’m nominating you for this thing, the Versatile Blogger Award. A blogging friend, RhapsodyBoheme, nominated me, and I thought of a few writers that I really enjoy. No pressure – but it was rather refreshing…
