The Reply-All Manifesto

By

I am a liar who cannot be trusted. After a self-pitying post about how I was going to fail to post anything for the first time in two months, I’ve snuck in before midnight and written something. I have no idea what this is, it fell out of my brain in about 10 minutes, but it is something and it’s late.

The Reply-All Manifesto

Wear the uniform, talk to the right people, keep them sweet.
Learn who everyone supports.
Partake in witty banter.
Reply-all to emails.
Pace corridors with a hurried frown, pen and pad in hand
Click click click click click click the pen in and out.
Agitated urgency.
Deflect blame, proliferate praise.
Reply-all to emails.
Moan about meetings.
Go to all the meetings.
Delegate, distribute.
Reply all to emails.
Extend 20-second conversations to three minutes,
Pontificate, aggrandise,
Banal smalltalk in the illusion of productivity.
Reply all to emails.
Avoid all the work.
Reply all to all of your emails.

I believe this is a reminder to yourself of why you want to be a writer and not return to the traditional workforce. Possibly brought about by your recent decision to seriously tackle the stories for which you left your job.
At the very least, these are the things I don’t miss about working for other people. It makes me sad for people who don’t get or take the opportunity to pursue things they are truly passionate about (an endeavor that doesn’t necessarily require someone to leave their job).

    1. Beautifully put. I feel like I’m on the couch and I now owe you a princely sum!

The streak continues! As a reason to end it, though, working on longer form pieces isn’t a bad one.

    1. Yes, I am shifting focus, but hopefully still writing as much on here. It will just be at the end of the day, rather than the start. Much depends, therefore, on the time we get the kids to bed :/
