The Sad Tale of Vicarious Jones

Vicarious Jones was given a wonderful send-off before leaving to sprint for just under 10 seconds for his country.
There was bunting, a street party and the primary school headteacher presented him with a messy collage of the Union flag. The local MP made a speech on a small stage erected on the village green. There was a celebration issue of the local paper.

The same mob saw him home, booed as the taxi pulled up in the small hours. They picketed the newsagent, demanded answers. He had run for just over 10 seconds.
‘You made us look silly.’

This is an extended version of an old 50-worder ‘Pride and Fall’. If I don’t have much time, I like to look at old stories and see if they have the legs to expand.
