Decisions and Superheroes

By

Look, every super-hero has to take a break and ponder their place in the world. Anyway, while Captain America had his existential crisis over a tea-cake on Saturday, I made a decision. Between May and September I will have five months without any commitments to my MA. I will, of course, need to earn money and August is school summer holidays so that’s largely a (happy) write-off, literally, but I’ve been thinking I would like to get at the every least least a first draft of a longer project down in that time.

I have three options.

  • Return to the book I’ve been working on for five years, but that has been in the drawer since last summer
  • Start something completely new
  • Develop either something I’ve written for the MA or on here

I don’t want to return to my original project. That is going to need a total overhaul and I’m not mentally ready for that. We’re on a break, frankly. The second option is an enigma wrapped in an enigma since I can’t decide to work on something that doesn’t exist yet, but it occurred to me that I could develop The Last of Logan.

It got a good mark when I handed it in last month – far better than I dared hope for – so it’s obviously a solid story, or got the makings of one. So that’s what I’m going to do. The thought of working with these characters for a long time and extending the story into something more substantial, even if it’s only novella length, feels really exciting.

I’m not sure how much time I’m going to get on it before May, but any spare time will be squirreled away on preparing for that. We’ll see in the next few weeks anyway.

I also want to thank the people that have started following me this week. It’s been so lovely to have new people reading and responding to what I’ve been writing. It means the world. There are even people who have liked my Facebook page who aren’t friends. Thank you so much.

Onwards.

  1. It’s really interesting to hear about your thought process. What MA are you doing? I’m looking forward to reading more of your work.

    1. Thank you wise monkey. It’s Creative Writing at Kingston University. I’m loving it. It’s very rigorous and is making me finish stuff!

  2. I’m in quite a similar position myself so I appreciate the weight of those options. I think there is a certain inherent paralysis in committing to something of novel length because its such an investment of time and effort -or in other words ‘the fear its not the right idea.’

    1. That’s true. It’s why I like starting small and then slowly scaling up to see if it has the legs

  4. I understand your feelings about returning to old works. I have a novel draft I need to rework, but I’ve reworked it quite a lot already, almost to the point I feel I could recite some of the passages.
So much more attractive to crack on with a new adventure, which I am in the midst of now, coming towards the end of a first draft.
Exciting, this writing lark, innit? 🙂

    1. Certainly is! Good luck with your new adventure. I’m the same. I’ve worked so much on my original project that to make the changes I know it needs requires me to come at it with brand new eyes. There are things that are so entrenched in the story that I have to find a way to come at it with a clean slate. That’s going to take some time.
