Switching It Up

Hello, everyone! Back to school, back to work. August saw almost no writing get done because I made the decision early in the school holidays that I didn’t want to get frustrated so made zero expectations of myself. As it was, I didn’t even try. If I had an hour in the evening by the time the kids were in bed, I invariably spent it with Zelda on the Switch.

I’ve also started freelancing back at the place where I quit last December in a bid to stop the savings fall off a cliff, so that is a delicate balancing act. I don’t want too many shifts, just enough to pay the bills while protecting the writing days. The weird lack of routine in the summer is always refreshing at first, but I always find myself pining for September by the time the August bank holiday comes around. Anyway, here we are, son No 1 is back at school so today was the first full day of writing I have had in weeks and weeks.

And it’s gone well. After redesigning the cards for The Last Of Logan, they all needed re-writing to account for the extra space for the text in the main narrative section. Today, I rewrote 27 of the 52 cards. By the end of the week, I want them all done and decisions made on the order. Only when I have decided on the order can I start on the artwork and other bonus bits. The upshot is, this project will definitely be done by the end of the month. I spent much of June and July plotting out a novel version of the story that I will get on with once these are done.

I’m really, really proud of this project, which is a rare old thing. I get occasional nice messages from strangers about it as it is pinned to my twitter profile and each one is the kick up the bum that I need to make sure I see it through. It has, I am told, a USP, which sounds good to me.

My MA starts up again in three weeks so I’ll be writing lots of new stuff again then too, which will hopefully see me post more new stories here. I got into a great routine with them at the start of the year.

Anyway, the real news is that last night I had a dream that Mandie Hines was coming to London to do a talk on the writing process, so I guess she has to do that now!

Hope you’re all well, just wanted to throw down an update at the end of a productive day. I also know I’ve been absent without leave with regards to reading your work. I absolutely apologise for this and will be back as I find my routine again xx
